City Guide: Cantabria, Spain.

This season, we are taking you to Northern Spain with blogger Béa, also known as Con Botas de Agua. Travelling to Cantabria guarantees you a unique encounter with nature, gastronomy and art.

White sand beaches, national parks, prehistoric caves, remarkable landmarks and splendid landscapes… These are just a few of the things you can expect!

This makes Cantabria the perfect destination for a fun family getaway.

As a child, Béa and her parents would spend their holidays there, and it is now her turn to show this region and its surroundings to her own daughters.

She was kind enough to share her 5 best tips to enjoy Cantabria with us:

1. Take a walk in Santader, Cantabria’s capital city

Surrounded by the sea and mountains, Santander is the perfect destination for a short family getaway.

It does not fail to seduce its visitors thanks to its stately atmosphere, its 19th century edifices and its charming terraces. Béa strongly recommends taking a stroll through the city and walking along its amazing bay, which is considered to be one of the most beautiful in the world.

Take the Avenida de Reina Victora to go to La Horadada, a sailing club which Béa used to visit as a child. Sailing, surf, canoe, paddle… There is something for every taste!

Interested in a cultural visit? Go to the Palacio de la Magdalena, one of Santander’s most iconic landmarks. This place is definitely worth a visit.

2. Visit Potes

Strolling through small village Potes while meeting pilgrims and mountain-climbers.

Getting hungry? Head towards La Parrilla de Santo Toribio, Béa’s favourite restaurant. She told us she used to eat there with her parents, and everything still looks just like it did back then!

Our bonus tip: try some Cocido Montanés, which is the region’s most typical dish. This stew contains haricot beans and several sorts of meat. Definitely your best bet to recover after a long family hike.

End the day on a high by enjoying a drink on a terrace all while admiring the mountains. Magical !

3. A hike in Los Picos de Europa

This is also a must-do activity! Following Béa’s precious advice, let’s get all the way to the top using Fuente Dé’s cable car. An incredible experience for the whole family! Even if, like Béa and her daughters, you suffer from fear of heights, we can promise you that the landscapes and the view are worth seeing. Once you are at the top, take a stroll and marvel at the panorama--although Béa’s daughters did find it more entertaining to play with the goat!

4. San Vicente de la Barquera and its cliff

This pretty small seaside town has got amazing beaches as well as a historical fishing port.

For a fantastic stroll: hike to the top while walking along the region’s cliffs.

Our bonus tip: If you are visiting in summer, bring your prettiest wicker basket, you might get lucky and harvest some blackberries.

5. Ending the day at Gerra beach

Our getaway finishes on Gerra beach. This beach is very lively during daytime thanks to many surfers and you will be able to admire a wonderful sunset at the end of the day.
